Project Background

Dow Chemical, one of the world’s leading chemical companies, approached Karvil Machinery with a request for a specialized sigma mixer to support their butyl rubber research program in the United States. They needed a machine that could combine precise mixing, vacuum degassing, controlled heating, and efficient discharge.

Karvil Machinery, with more than 20 years of expertise in sigma mixers, was selected to design and manufacture a 5L vacuum heating sigma mixer that met Dow’s technical standards and research needs.

The Customized Solution

Karvil engineers developed a lab-scale sigma kneader customized for Dow Chemical’s butyl rubber processing:

• Mixing System: Dual sigma blades, designed for high-viscosity materials

• Drive & Control: Siemens motor with ABB inverter, variable speed (0–42 rpm / 0–35 rpm)

• Vacuum Integration: Pump and buffer tank to remove air bubbles and improve material density

• Heating Capability: Electric heating up to 230°C for accurate temperature control

• Discharge Method: Screw extrusion with DN40 manual valve, ensuring clean and efficient output

• Material Construction: Full stainless steel 304, mirror-polished for easy cleaning and long-term durability

This lab mixer allows Dow’s R&D team to handle small batches of butyl rubber with the same process reliability found in large-scale production.
